by no means will supercars dissapear. never. they may change, there might be throwbacks. but never dissapear. what was wil smith driving in A.I.? wasnt that an audi sportscar (a decendant of the r8). real awsome at that. whatever the hell it was powered by, it was insane. Audi in anycase uses diesel even in their v10tdi r8 because you get what you want out of a very efficient fuel without the insane costs of hybrid and electric motors. Electric motors are not the problem, its the power source. if you want a good elecctric car, you need a small portable nuclear plant under the bonnet. Dont have to refill for the life of the car or a few decades.

I believe the supercar age isnt over, but we are now entering a period of transition. todays mass produced sportscars perform like yesterdays supercars, and todays supercars are now hypercars. Add in the new segment of lightweight trackday racers like the ariel atom ,xbow, lotus exige and you wonder whats next. well weve already known for some time, alternative power vehicles. those electric cars are not as bad as we thought. The garage hacks are growing, building little torque happy rockets that are beating the HP monsters at the local track. But more than this is the fact that the automobile and the roads we drive on is ready for the future. cars that drive and maintain themselves. The technology is here, its just a question of how to implement and the funding there in. Global warming is very real, and the average person can see the changes in weather. but its not just cars that polute, the media has been very hush hush about the expodentially massive amount of pollution that commercial aircraft give off in the upper atmosphere. So is it the end of an era, in a way yes. Todays teens can purchase a late model honda civic mod it out to 700hp, 1000hp production cars is real. but to what end? with roads still governed by 55mph speed limits (pitfully LAME NY) and gas prices all over the place, the car is now between a rock and a hardplace. Interesting enough (being a florida native) ive seen a growing trend in auto guys moving from car fun to boating, and even flying. its growing so rapidly its amazing to see so many Donzi's cruzing the channels, or personal jets flying in and out of small airports. Yes a part of whats happening is the auto scene is being dominated by youth, and the adults are moving into another Finacial bracket there kids just cant afford.

in regards to the jemery clarkson thing on supercars, he's been wrong before he once said that nothing would ever be faster than the mclaren f1 and that everything would be a step back from there on in. for me as long as there are cars there will be supercars

What’s up with Top Gear teasing us with clips and then not following through??? The first episode of this season they began with a teaser montage of what to expect this season. One clip showed a ZR1 and an R8 running about their track while another showed the tach of a ZR1. Every week I have waited anxiously for this episode and now the season is over and they never aired it. What’s up with that? They also had a clip of Hammond driving what looked to be a piece of airfield equipment and crashing into something, that never aired either.

Will the supercar die? No, it will just take a different form. We already have the first generation of these, hybrid, electric, fuelcell cars in the likes of the Fisker Karma and Tesla roadster. They wouldn't be my first choice, personally I dont think you can beat the sound of a petrol powered car. The V8 rumble, V12 thunder or scream of a ferrari are what I desire but as time goes by the kids getting into cars will aspire to a very different breed of exotica. The question then becomes, what makes a car a supercar? Anything that is cutting edge design, extreme performance and magnificent handling irrespective of its powerplant. And anyway, who knows what our cars will be powered by in the future, but one thing is for certain, it wont be gasolene!

i for one love it when a car company takes a 4cyl or 6 cyl engine and gets the most out it. yeah, a V8 is smoother, but can the world really afford that kind of petroleum glutony anymore? i love the fact that Lotus makes cars that are tremendous fun to drive AND get fairly good fuel economy (BMW too, to a certain extent).

We are indeed at an end of an era as far as supercars go. With rumors of an electric audi R8, and diesel powered hybrid super cars popping up out of many educational institutions the super car as we know it is going to the wayside. but that doesn't mean fast is going away. its just being repowered. I personally would love to see diesel powered super cars. im sure jeremy clarkson would love a chipped 650 hp 1200ft-lb duramax in place of a zonda v-12 engine. it s all about the gearing though and if the auto makers get them down right we could 40 mpg supercars that will do 200 mph at 3000 rpm. so what do u say Clarkson try on something like that for size and see how it fits.

PT Cruiser is a success for Chrysler, which is sad because it was voted as one of the worst cars. In fact, Chrysler took 5 of the top 10 spots as the worst cars produced. Over the week, Chrysler was matching the governments Cash For Clunkers offer on their cars. I know this is off topic for today's show, but...why didn't the Obama administration put in a stipulation in that you would receive the 00-00 for a fuel efficient car in the Cash For Clunkers program for AN AMERICAN CAR? GM, Ford or Chrysler only. I guarantee the program wouldn't have lost steam in less than a week. Probably more than half of the sales were Toyota's, Honda's or something else that had to be shipped here. And now they want to put in more money to extend the program? EPIC FAIL IMO.....just sayin'.

Not possible. Supercars cannot die. Like the poster below me the same thing happened in the 70s, and after a small dark period they came back. So even though new supercars might be considerably changed for awhile (especially in the US) eventually they will rise back up when technology advances enough and we will see them once again. It'll just take a little time, that's all.

everything depends on your definition of what a "super car" is like on top gear the hamster said a 911 was a super car so no the super car will not ever DIE there will always be something between a 911 and a veyron that would be considered a super car. the real question is will real, attainable sports cars like the corvette,elise,and viper survive upcoming CAFE regulations or just become watered down shadows of their former selves

super cars won't die. if they did, they wouldn't be super cars, since super stuff can't die. thus, if they died, they wouldn't be super cars... which launches into a whole new box of paradoxes. but in a more practical sense, everyone should go buy a high performance car to make sure super cars stay super (and thus continue to be around)

We are at the end of one era and moving into another era. The Tesla is the proof of this. I think everyone knows this and really, anyone saying otherwise, on TV or the Web, is doing so for dramatic purposes. All car guys/gals know there will always be a market for sports cars, regardless of their power and drive trains.

I'm disappointed that the season was only 7 episodes and as for the supercar I think it will live because of "green cars" like Jay Leno said when James May talked to him about the Honda FCX Clarity

The Supercar will never be gone for good as long as people live. Economic pressure or eco-nazis can only hold it down for a while. The same conversation went on in the late 60's early 70's. Here we are 40 years later with econoboxes trashing the "high performance" cars of that era. My advise, kill socialism, mock eco-dipshits like they deserve and have them maning the oilwells that drill for the life blood of suercars.
