REV iPhone Car Diagnostic Tool - Road Testament - 2/04/2010

I just started watching Fast Lane Daily today and watched all episodes newer than this backwards to this episode. I am officially calling it a night. I was really enjoying some of the episodes there and then this episode comes on and all I hear is some guy in an orange coat who is in a hurry to finish the segment which was reciprocal as the FLD host started rushing too. Also, he was talking about the concept of very simple things and the one guy says "Nobody driving will understand that". Hold on, if your pulling your own OBD codes I'm pretty sure you should know what throttle position etc. are. I loved all the other episodes and did not comment(you always hear more bad than good), but this episode was not good by any means.

I don't know about this new guy, Alex. I like JF in FLDetours, and I think he'd be better if he weren't with Alex at the same time, because he keeps interrupting. And nobody is going to understand stuff going through the ECU? Intake temperature, throttle response... Seriously? I think I'd dislike Alex less if we'd been introduced to him. Alex, please introduce yourself!

..and they should let the guys at Polyphony Digital of GranTurismo to actually do the diagnostic maps ( like in he Nissan GTR35 ) just so that it would be more easier for the driver/owner to comprehend that stats -- those stats shown in the iphone is still a bit muddled and it's quite easy to forget the color codes.

and also JF sounds funny. i dont like to hear him report. bring back real hosts

this show is getting pretty dumb. i feel like im just watching ads. i want to know whats going on in the car world. the ipod app is a cool thing but you didnt even say where i can get that cable or how to install it. regardless, it was just another stupid ad. please report on car news, not car products. this isnt HSN

That was NOT cool stuff Alex. Gee, you guy's either think viewers are pretty thick to repeat over and over about it's Wi-Fi or you guy's are pretty thick?...?....? The show really sucked. Please learn "on air" commentary. One talks and the other listens, then the other way. Got it! Guy's please watch the episode and you will cringe. This is the reason we all like Derek D. I can see it...Gee,...it's not Rocket Science,....we don't need Derek,...we can host a show...how hard can it be? A lot bloody harder than you think and Derek makes it look easy. That's his talent and the viewers know that. Please JF stand BEHIND the camera NOT in front and Alex (sorry, but you don't escape)...Alex stay behind the wheel,...your not a show host.....where's Derek???

OBDII became manditory in the states in 97, some makes had it in 96 though. So you could probably use this gizmo on a 97 or newer. And i really dont think this orange coat knows what hes talking about. "seasonality" lol.

WRONG you don't need different maps for different areas, that's why new cars have an ECU so they can adjust for the different temps or air pressure. I thought this was going to be a cool review about REV instead it was them talking about TomTom again and some BS about remapping your car everytime you go up a hill or the seasons change. JF you're a good producer but please stay off camera and leave it to the pros.

stop having segments of jf -hes not good at hosting. car news ? seriously guys. the comercials aren't bad and i don't mind watching them if it keeps the show on. but seriously once again , episodes like today blow.

Hey I would love to hear a Road Testament about Alex's rally BMW and the work and gadgets put into it seeing that Bullrun and Gumball are finalizing routes and everything. Maybe get some other experienced rally drivers on the show too (Rawlings, Claus, etc). Also when is the movie "32 Hours and 7 Minutes" coming out?

The young guy can't spit his words out. The old guy can't let the young guy finish and you took 6 minutes to say something that you could have said in 1 minute. A very irritating episode. What I would have liked to have seen is how I could find the port in my car for the wifi plug and if it is possible, how I can use the program to remap my cars engine. It wasn't clear if the program just shows me what my engine is doing or if allows me to make changes to it.

I'm sorry, but Alex Roy seems to underestimate the knowledge base of the viewers. When Jeff was going through the data, Alex said, "No one driving will understand that." Alex, are you trying to piss people off, or are you that much of an idiot?

Alex, manufacturers don't need to match location data to the ECU to adjust the fuel and ignition maps. Most modern ECU's have compensation maps to adjust engine performance based on outside environmental conditions, that way they don't care about location, simply the atmospherics around the car at any given time. The reason people are able to hack ECU's for better fuel economy is that all manufacturers that offer a warranty will always play on the side of safety and so if the owner is willing to play things a little closer to the wind the they can get better fuel economy. The ECU's which control the GM LS7 for instance....... you can improve the fuel economy on those by simply adjusting one single value in the stock ECU which is the time it spends in the "abuse" map. This is the map that the ECU uses when the driver is driving the car hard, then when they go back to cruising on the motorway again, some cars will take minutes before the ECU reverts back to the "Cruise" map which is much leaner. If you adjust this "Abuse to Cruise" timeout to say 20 seconds instead of 10 minutes, you get better overall fuel economy without taking any risks. I love the show, but if you guys are going to do a technical piece then you really need to be more informative and show more detail I think. As you'll see from a few of the comments below, I think you lost a few people........ then again maybe I just did too :) LOL Please keep up the good work :) I'm based in New Zealand and watch the show most days.

well the app seems pretty cool, but in all honesty unless you got yourself a supremely tricked out mobile that heavily dependent on computer tweeks to get it going -like an F1 car- than this is more gadetry than practicle. If you simply want general car performance specs , typical 0-60 times power torque blah blah then theres several apps for the iphone/touch that can do it using its built-in accelerometer. and lastly, consider your car. you dont wanna be busting up your tranny and diff trying to max out the app either. all in all. the apps are great, but if you gota great ride dont destroy it either.

Useless nerd gadget, unless you have a GTR, or are Night Rider (well said guy in video), people are not interested if their car is only at 95% instead of 99.5%, specially in Argentina, also in most places cars are models pre year 2000 and too bad fossil fuel cars are not what earth conscious people will buy ... this show is becoming one of those "As Seen On TV Shows".
