Traffic Lore and the Future of In-Car GPS - Road Testament

I wish you guys wouldn't talk about thing that you obviously didn't do any research on (Just Google "google maps turn by turn) and know vary little about.    Also, the bulk of the traffic data where I live is gathered by sensors on the road, there are even automated signs that give estimated travel times. Helicopters aren't very useful in areas with a lot of urban sprawl.  They use this information on fl511.com.  
I usually tend to skip road testament, but I figured I would give it a try again.  It's getting better but, sorry guys it's still not worth my time.

Also chiming in that android based phones since 2.1 have google maps and "google navigation" turn by turn directions provided by google navigation program. The 2.1 OS has a huge user base of android systems, with 2.2 on its way to newer devices.  

I am sure apple will at some point create similar and "revolutionary" but right now google nav is pretty sweet. I agree that a crowd source approach is a viable solution. However, this requires a large user base, many iterations (public testing), large amount of battery usage and bandwith. Im not sure what apple is doing in the gps arena, but all of those things I mention except for having a large user base is not very Apple. I like Apple but I believe google will have another 2-6 updates to its apps, gps, and operating system before we see another Iphone.

I agree cell phones are so ubiquitous that gps technology will try to improve in that sector. Especially devices such as ipad, android tablets, windows tablets that will have the screen real estate to provide users with an richer interface. While tablets such as ipads, right now are considerably bigger than cell phones, if the industry support is their to build docks or provide wireless syncing solutions with the vehicle. I would personally like a device like that, which can also maybe record and store performance data, emissions data and upload that information to a server, this also keeps my phone free so I can make calls.

As to your remarks about four square and facebook, you guys are also apart of the social media realm, don't put your foot in your mouth, I have been hearing facebook and foursquare is dead since it came out. They are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Lastly trapster is a great app and I have been using it for a while now, but as you see with apps like this and foursquare, if a new app is built right, it can gain huge amounts of users very quickly.

The Google Android Application is called Google Navigation, which provides accurate turn by turn directions and has a traffic layer that indicates traffic status (green, yellow, red, red/gray) and also calculates trip time based on traffic conditions.  It will also provide alternate routing options, with trip time for each.  While it's admittedly not real time, it's pretty close.  Given the growth of android phones on Verizon, I suspect that the size of the "real time" data base is large and growing geometrically.

I sadly live in Alabama and there are stores that sell pigs feet in packs of 3. Why dont they include the 4th foot. Are pigs feet for sale in grocery or possibly in gas stations in New England states?

Hey dudes!  Last week you trashed every Ferrari drive whose car caught on fire, and totally dismissed the possibility that there was any flaw with Ferrari. This week, Ferrari recalled all their Italia's for a defects in some glued parts that can induce the fires.  So howabout a little humility for a change; perhaps a small admission that you were a bit wrong.?

I have an Android phone and it has replaced my Garmin.  Not only does it give turn by turn directions better but it also has traffic data, voice recognition and I can search for things using 3g on Google Maps. iPhones suck

Great video discussion, but your mentioning that google maps doesn't do turn by turn, only relates to those using an iphone.  Android phones, which are very abundant, do the turn by turn that you mention is lacking and feedbacks the data to the google servers...I think this is the answer to your discussion pretty much, buy an android phone :)

Guys, Google Maps on my Android phone crowdsources very much like Dash. It's not yet as user friendly but it's getting there.

I have a suggestion. Why doesn't the GPS unit ask the user,  " Please, assess condition. Is there an accident or bottle neck, etc?" A microphone would be required for  users to speak and give small delayed updates for other users. For example, I'm driving on I-65, I suddenly approaching an accident. My GPS notices my decline in speed. The unit ask me to assess road conditions. I would respond with a common phrase  like  accident or bottle neck or whatever.

You need an Android phone with turn by turn directions - it's the best of both worlds, Google map data with spoken directions and voice recognition.

Google Maps traffic data in many countries comes from the data from the Australian developed SCATS system which is taken from loops in the roads at traffic signals, which is infact volume data, not speed.
