Modifying the EPA mileage test procedures to better reflect alternate drive train technologies is trickier than you might think. The distance covered for both the City and Highway tests is about the same - a little over 11 miles for City and 10 for Highway. What they are really testing in stop-and-go versus steady state loads on the drive train. Modifying these tests to better reflect the cutoff between battery and gas power systems would dramatically increase the cost of the tests. But changing the existing tests would probably just confuse people. Assuming they figure out how to absorb the costs, the simplest and mist informative metric would be a mileage indicator for when the drive train shifts from electric to gas under the City test.

To test fuel economy they should drive a set number of miles lets say 100 miles city, 100 miles highway and that should be the fuel economy number

Nice Episode, really like Leo, cool and funny guy. About the mileage measuring - If it is a mild hybrid, you could continue the normal test and get the mpgs urban and highway. If it is a plugin hybrid, you could measure the consumption when the engine with a generator is on, and just measure how much co2 its pumping off, it is usually constant speed, already charging the battery. Also the makers should tell you the range in miles at different speeds before the battery runs out and the engine kicks in, usually going slower get you further.

What about Vauxhall? Holden. Did any of you know that Ford offered the Focus ST in Mexico? (about a year ago) People would buy them, disassemble them and bring them back to the USA. I found this out from a 2007 SEMA attendee. Back to the Astra it was at the autoshows, it was at SEMA 2007. this is what i think volt is a cool hybar but what there need to do is make it good on mpg but then for people that like speed there suold have like a thing that turn on the engines and can make the engines fast with upgards and for a fast car but then when u want to good mpg then go back to hybar u get what i mean ?

I like to rev engines to get attetntion but sadly always the wrong turn their heads...^^

They should do 3 tests, one at 30mph, one at 70mph, one at 100mph all at a 50 mile range.

Matt you spend 3 hours a day reading car news and did not know about the Astra? Don't you go to auto shows? You have to look at everything, even the Geely's. Astra was doing a state by state tour in December. Granted it was only known if you went to the Saturn site....Ford is not really "bringing" over the European models the way Saturn is bringing over the Astra. Ford's European cars will be built here, because it will cost less to do so, unlike GM exporting the Astra from Germany. Lets hope we get the Insignia to replace the Aura. I say they do EPA testing by the old school way and put Matt in charge, because 32 mpg in a vette is very good even if he was shifting at 2000 rpm's.

i like the way the fuel estimates r now . to me it means ima get so much when im stopin and goin. and highway means how much u get when u keep goin. as for hybrids they have enough electronics on them to have a screen that says ur current mpg. no way in hell should they downsize the escalade. thats whole point is to b big an flashy! i don no what the hell chryser is doing. is it so hard to make a decent lookin avenger with a nice interior! or to not try an copping bentlys. o an mett what do leo do? like wat company or is he a pr or somthing cause no1 nos

well as far as i am concerned they can keep doing the EPA like they are now because no one has really complained from what i know

not clean enough for the USA? that's funny,that red Saturn thing on the astra its nor very good for any opel:) , the OPEL astra here in europe costs about 20.000euros, +- 28,000USD and it depends of the engine, in most of Europe we count the millage by liter per 100km i don't know if that is more correct than mile per gallon, candles with tire smell and exhaust music its my secret to get laid :D

Well I cannot load past 2:20...so I have not seen the entire show yet, but I do have a comment regarding the Astra: You are right, it is all about marketing. I see the Astra up here in Canada selling like hotcakes; at least in the west. It is funny, the Canadian dollar was above, recently was equal and right now it is a bit below the US green-back and we seem to have no problem selling Astras here = Marketing... (Hopefully I can see the rest of the show soon.)

Yeah I have to agree with Matt. Whenever my WRX is parked in a lot, a typical response I get from someone is "Oh, cute car". Although, when I drive by blasting my Borla Cat-back, I always turn heads (in a good way). I've even been asked by some people, whom no nothing about Subarus, what size V8 I'm running under the hood. When I tell them it's a four banger, they're like "get out!!" Subaru Boxer + Borla = The Sexxxxxx.
