The FIA has a bit of a juggling act to perform. Make it interesting whilst keeping it safe - people want to see incidents (sad as that is!) [Always remember Motorsport is Dangerous]. Make it competitive whilst making it fair? Is employing industrial espionage fair?. But restricting the premier motorsport series to one engine type or to one tyre type would be detrimental to development and to innovation. OMG this post was meant to be posted a year ago! Now I will admit that if I try and watch a GP on the old gogglebox, I will end up asleep, but put me on a circuit - or even better in the woods on a rally and I will sweat gearbox oil! (Nothing beats the sound of a 6R4 on full chat through the Cumbrian woods!)

As you can tell from most of the comments below there is a huge "stigma" with going to stock engines. Personally, even if the sport is more driver based you will not find more fans. If people want to watch a stock car race, they will go to one. If people want to go to a formula 1 race, that is what they will do. If formula 1 seeks more fans, more advertisements should be set forth, much like other sports (ie. baseball and football). Please post responces

I'm a fan of F1, I usually go to one or two races per year and watch the others on tv. Standard engine/trnsmissions would mean F1 would be abandoning its niche. Sure, limit costs through some standardization (like the steering wheel computers last year and tires before that) or cost restrictions (like the practice time restrictions)... but if you go to a standard car, then the A1GP becomes the more interesting series - it's a Ferrari car at least and it ties national pride into the racing... how would F1 remain interesting by comparison? The A1GP race weekend schedule is already more interesting! Bernie Ecclestone is becoming a delusional old idiot - cancelling F1 in North America? The core sales area for all manfacturers? Then cancelling France, another very important market? Well, at least Bernie's daughters are hot.

I am a semi fan to F1 - I have been to a couple of races and enjoy it. What I really like is the development that the car manufactures makes with their engines. They then use that development to improve the cars that they sell. I wonder how the car world would look if they never banned turbo engines which they used in the old days... What ever development they make with the new engines, is still going to be challenging for the race...

A spec engine for F1 is just stupid. Then whats the point of manufacturers (were the teams get most of their money) being involved? Bernie is now threatening to shoot himself in the foot!! The whole point of F1 existing at all is to show off the capabilities of each manafacturer. But it could be a boon for whoever is chosin to make those motors. Can you imagine the marketing around the making the motors for F1?

F1 is based on technology and innovation. To me F1 should be based on saying, "there are different ways to get from point A to point B, figure out how to do it the fastest". Other than safety and cheating violations, FIA should step back and let technology grow. If they want to try to even the playing field maybe they can put a financial cap teams, but putting a cap on innovation is the last thing they should do.

The specialty of the formula one is that every single team does their own developments and that all teams try to use the best of the best to win. With one engine Layout the carmakers like Ferrari and BMW and Mercedes will quit heir engagments in the formula one because they can't set new standarts in racing technologys there and so their marketing platform "formula one" is becoming average racing and average is not good enough for such huge brands.

I think most people are going to agree that full compitition is the way to go, basically keep it the way it is engine wise. But, it is obvious that people want to see more competition within the races; passing and racers on top. This can be achieved through course design easy. F1 courses have so many corners that passing is next to impossible in most cases. F1 cars all go so fast that passing is something that is done only at the perfect moment. Designing courses that have wider corners, long straights with NASCAR like corners followed by a bunch of twisties will solve the problems easy.

I also Agree although I don't follow F1 racing, 1 single designed Engine would damage the sport alot. My main question would be if they do go to a single designed engine, who would build this base engine? I don't think Ferrari would be too happy if you told them they had to use a McLaren based engine.

The same engines in F1 car would be the same as reverting back to go cart racing... Equal cars/ no more driver advantage... It could be a great equalizer...? And it could run all the times with deep pockets away?

I agree if they dont make too much passes in f1 then the different manufacturers cant really stand out from one another. Having one engine spec is ridiculous.

* Hey guys! Really dig the layout & format in the garage with all the great cars in the background, sweet! "Wait a sec, let me check my cheat sheet. Never mind, can't find what I wrote!" Yeah, I come prepared for the show :D Actually, out of all the bazilion dollars spent in F1, very little trickles down to the road. Renault did very well for many seasons. How much F1 is in a Twingo? Exactly, zero. Like Sam said above, Toyota spends gigantic sums & has yet to win a race. How much F1 is in a Corolla? Camry? It works in theory, but in practice, due to costs, most of the technologies don't see the light of day. Yes Ferrari transfered the F1 tiptronic to their road cars, but you dont need F1 to do that. Various other manufacturers have similiar if not even better technologies, or have the R&D resources. So lets not kid ourselves, F1 hardly improves the breed for the general public. RALLY however on the other hand has far more transfer of technology. You can goto your local Mitsu or Subi dealer & get many technologies directly atributable to the sport. They are useable & affordable super cars that can do over 200KM/h in the snow!!!

I'm a big fan of Formula 1 and I think the FIA trying to make all the teams go to one engine is rediculous. It takes almost all the competitive engineering that the teams must do. I enjoy watching how different manufactures can do on a race track, the cars aren't just known by numbers or drivers, they're known for the team they represent. Its amazing to see that you can go out and buy a car that was engineering by the same company that developed the Formula 1 car you watch on TV. The FIA is too controlling over the sport. I like the Regenerative Braking/KERS systems that teams are required to use, but the freeze on engine development hurts the entire car industry. There is so much technology developed in Formula 1 that has trickeled down into standard road cars. If the teams want to spend as much money as they want, let them. Toyota spent the most money in 2007, yet they didn't win a single race. Different companies building their engines is what sets Formula 1 apart from other racing leagues, like IRL (which is supplied by Honda).

i think it would be wrong for all the f1 teams to have the same engine because that would decrease competition which would cause a decrease in innovation
