In the states how much is car insurance as the cars you suggested a 16yo (17yo to drive in uk) would not get insurared and if they did it would be around the £3k mark a year on a scooby. Great show matt, I wouldn't totally disagree withe the v6 mustang though, you can put a turbo or a Kenny Bell supercharger. (If the engine is low miles and great shape). And as you said before it all about power to weight. I still think a corvette would excellent choice if he's looking for a hot date. But he should ask about the insurance costs and if he's going to drive in the winter like i do. Buy winter tires.

* Matt, thanks very much for taking the time+research to answer the new young drivers questions. Jst to add some perspective, location: CHICAGO. If he goes with a HI-HP RWD, he will only be able to safely use it 3 months of the year. Then he has to find+PAY storage for 9 MOONTHS. HI Torque Mustang with HI FRONT Weight distribution+Light Rear End = perfect recipe for disaster. The list of distractions+tempations is overwhelming: Stereo, CD, DVD, GPS, Cell Phone, SMS messeges, Cigarettes, Matches, Lighters, etc, etc. Not to mention the usual temptation of Drinking&Driving among young adults. FRONT WHEEL DRIVE with 4 WINTER TIRES, ie Honda, etc. Good fuel economy+ALL YEAR ROUND USE. SUBARU AWD another EXCELLENT CHOICE especially in the given climate. TNKS!

If there were a two seater that you liked I would get one. With the GTI you'll be lugging all of your buddies around all the time. With a two seater there's no room for anyone but you and your best bud or a some slutty sophmore.

I liked Matt's answers to the first question. My choices in that situation a few years back didn't include any C5 Vettes (which would have been SICK), but I did end up with a 2000 Mustang GT (stick) for the same price you were talking about. Just like you said, great car to drag race (a few bolt-ons almost got me 12s), and I plan on throwing some brakes and a T-A & PHB on it and hitting up some PDX events. Definitely the way to go!

You guys suggest the 16-year-old buy an Audi when he only has $10k to spend on the entire car ... tsk, tsk. The older the car, the more work that'll be needed. Not a wise choice. Go buy a VW GTi ... save on parts, save on insurance, and - accept for the sure-to-be-installed rear stress bar - you'll have more space than many SUVs.

Hmmm, I really enjoyed hearing from James Chen, and the few track shots of the GTR in action were awsome... but on the whole I was suprized how short and simple this episode seemed to be. I was hoping for more shots and inpho on the other GTR's.

Young Man! Get the A4 or the WRX. You'll get all kinds of young tail. Lambo Orange is way better than Lambo Yellow. Yellow is Big Birdish.
