another alternative fuel is natural gas, in india, we have public transport in some cities running entirely on lpg or cng. it makes a cleaner fuel, and its smokeless, and , in india, it comes at half the price of normal gasoline.

i think diesels are very good. personally, i have owned and driven loads in india. i have a '04 skoda ocatvia 1.9 tdi, a mercedes e270 cdi '06, and '08 audi q7 3.0d and they all rock. but dont think that im not a petrolhead matt, coz i have many more petrols, like a modified '05 skoda octavia vrs tuned for 500bhp. but in todays world, i think diesels are a very practical option.

I love the way diesel technology is coming. For example Gale Banks has the right ideal about diesel. I have a 2006 Ford F-250 with a 6.0 diesel, and it weighs 6200lbs. I put a Banks six gun kit on my truck and now I have 500hp and 680ftlbs of torque. When I am not pulling my trailer I get about 21mpg city and 28 to 30 mpg on highway. I also agree they need to bring American badged europe diesel cars to the U.S.

Matt, you talk about the new car and how great it is, but you don't explain what a bluetec diesel is, how it is different than the old diesel engines, what it can do, etc?

I agree. Torque is so much more useful in daily driving than horsepower. My mom drives an e300 turbo diesel, I love borrowing it and just stepping on it on some back road. I am also waiting for a used 335iD, it's a bit sad to hear that BMW will only bring automatic models here.

Today's diesels (even dirty diesels like my 2006) are very fickle when it comes to fuel quality. Only fuel up at truck stops, or at a station that gets a lot of turnover (a lot of turnover) and you can verify this. Even if you buy brand name it doesn't mean anything if the fuel has been sitting in the underground tank for months. Next thing you know the fuel pump, tandem pump and a $272.00 flap goes bad and your stuck with a $1500.00 repair bill. Guess how I know. So add algaecide/bio clean every couple of months.

I've got an 83 300 Turbo Diesel W123 chassis(same as 240 but nicer inside). I love this car. It's been in my family since 1987 and has only covered 240k miles since 83. I can honestly say that I agree that those cars ARE bulletproof. I had a friend put gas in it by mistake and he didn't catch it til we were back on the road. Ran it til it quit. But danged if the car didn't run even better after the tank was drained and filled with diesel.

not all diesel cars make the black exhaust smoke(i never so one on the street, but i already saw tunned 4x4 cars having the black smoke), and they dont smell bad, maybe the very old cars would do that, diesels are great but i live in europe so....btw the floor fall out becouse of the speed lol :D

Nice episode Matt!!! I know this engine without the Bluetec thing and it's a blast and I don't understand people who drive trucks without a turbodiesel engine. Well the Diesel engines from Dodge Ram are shit because they have no turbo and all but real turbodiesel like the ones from the european carmakers are the best. Excpet for sportscars so far...
