Snobootz - A Better Version of Tire Chains?
I have always been stubborn about getting snow tires or putting chains on my car in the winter. After all, I don't want to run the risk of having the wheels scratched when the new tires are put on, and I certainly don't want to have a set of chains rattling around, metal-on-metal. Who even knows what kind of damage that would cause.... Then I found Snobootz, a sort of a treaded wrap for your wheels with steel and rubber treads to give much improved winter grip. The rubber pads give the feel of a snow tire in the deep stuff, and the "ice grabber" steel points give traction, obviously, on ice.
During testing, a rear-wheel drive truck equipped with snow tires took 22 seconds to accelerate to 20 mph on ice. The same truck with snow tires and chains took 9 seconds, and with Snobootz, 7.5 seconds. I can assume that braking is equally improved. A set is only (roughly) 0, the price of just one good snow tire, so if you currently use chains or you are stubborn like me, it's something worth looking into.
