I don't want to drive around with rims on the car that don't look cool half the year.

That's weird because the snowboots or also snowsocks they sell in europe sucks.
The ones I know only help to accelerate on grounds with a low grip level but in curves or by braking they miserably fail. 
Snow tyres improve the cars grip when the temperature falls below 7°C. They have also another profile to increase handling capabilities in snow or heavy rain. If the road is too slipery because of Ice or heavy Snow you put snowchains on. But don't forget to put them off again when you reach normal tarmac because you don't just destroy the road you also destroy your chains.
btw. Matt if you don't want to scratch your rims why don't you just buy another set of rims only for the winter.

Maybe these Snowbootz are much better than the ones here in europe but if you live in the alps there is nothing better than real snowtyres and the last choice are chains.
