Notes on the Goodyear Tire Test

More on the Goodyear Tire test.
As many of you have, by now, seen the episode, I feel the need to clarify a few things in relation to the Goodyear Tire Test.
- Obviously Goodyear invited us all out there, and put the test together, so in the comparison test between the three tires, it was pre-set up that the new Eagle GT would feel the best (which it honestly did, especially in the wet).
- Goodyear's tire testing facility is really amazing, with the ability to flood the track with an even inch of water on the fly in select places via a watering system on one side of the track. The track itself has a 1% downward grade, to ensure the water flows evenly across the track. It also lets you test how the tires perform in the dry, the wet, and when the tires are wet but the road is dry (super slick!)

- The Kumho tires on the white car (the one I spun) were TERRIBLE. And, when testing a tire, you really do want to push it as hard as you can to the point of breaking traction. That's how you find out what is the grippiest, by measuring where the breaking point is. On that car, I was able to spin it around just by tapping the gas a bit in the corner.
- For the record, I didn't spin either of the other two cars, but Gene did spin one of them....
- As for the S2000 burnout, the new Eagle GT's are not very smoky tires at all, so when you light them up, they spin, but billowing clouds of white smoke aren't really in the cards unless you do a brake stand, which I was not about to do in a borrowed car with the owner watching me. The S2000 is probably the best car I've driven on an autocross course too, even better than the Mini. Rear wheel drive rules.
- My 1998 Corvette came with the original Goodyear F1 Steel runflats, and I hated them. The first generation of run flat tires were hard and gripped like shit. So I switched to Michelin's, which I like. However, after testing the newer runflats out there, I'm going to get the Goodyear F1 Supercar tires for my new wheels, and see what happens. I'll keep you guys posted.
