Top 8 Traffic Myths Uncovered
There’s a lot of hot exhaust blowing out of people's mouths these days about certain traffic law situations on the road, be it tickets, cops, or radar detectors; some of these myths are pretty popular. Whether you know them or not (or have never even realized that some of these "facts" are indeed myths, this would be a good refresher for those of you (and most definitely me) who are prone to getting nailed by cops. Myth No. 1: If the officer makes a single mistake on your ticket, the case will be dropped. Fact: Small common mistakes are usually overlooked (wrong order of a person’s name) so there’s a slim chance it will get thrown out. However, wrong identity, location, car description, or situation at the time of the crime will most likely help you win.
Myth No. 2 If the officer doesn't show up in court, you automatically win. Fact: You have a right to see your accuser but the judge can easily reschedule trial so the officer can appear. This one can go both ways. Myth No. 3 Red cars get more tickets. Fact: There is no official study confirming the myth that red cars get pulled over more often. Also, they don’t pay higher insurance rates then everyone else (at least that’s what Allstate / Progressive says). Myth No. 4 You need a lawyer to beat a ticket. Fact: There’s plenty of information out on the internet plus numerous publications. With a little homework and study time anyone can fend off a ticket just as good as a lawyer. The only real downside to lawyer-ing up is the cost, but if that’s not a concern go for it. Myth No. 5 If you get a ticket in another state, your home state won't find out about it. Fact: There are only a handful of states -- Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Michigan and Wisconsin -- that are not members of the Interstate Drivers License Compact, which shares such information. Myth No. 6 You can make up an excuse to get out of the ticket. Fact: Most cops don't care (with exceptions of course) about excuses because they pulled you over for a reason. Plus, an excuse as to why you are speeding is an admission to guilt so you are better off keeping quiet and taking your fight to court. And always remember - BE NICE! :)
Myth No. 7 A radar detector will ensure that you never get pulled over. Fact: Ken Underwood, the president of the National Safety Commission, says "Radar detectors give drivers a false sense of security that they can speed as much as they want without facing the consequences of breaking the law." You may be able to get away with speeding, but running lights and stop signs or committing other infractions; a radar detector won't warn you. (Personal note: This doesn't apply to Valentine 1 owners... just kidding, or am I?)
Myth No. 8 If you don't sign the ticket, it will be dismissed. Fact: Signing a ticket is not an admission of guilt. The signature is merely an acknowledgement you received the ticket and a promise to appear in court. In some states, not signing the ticket will land you in jail, it's not worth risking it - even if you fear big brother is watching you everywhere. (**hides tinfoil hat**)
