why does it have US bumpers on it?

I remember reading a very cool article about a car like this in Car & Driver (or one of the other major US magazines). It started off with a guy on the Autobahn cruising along when a GTi came up behind and flashed his brights. He decided to pull to the right and floor it to mess with the GTi driver. To his surprise the GTi went by him like he was standing still. I have told many people about the 928/GTi over the years to much disbelief. This is the first I have seen of it since. I am glad to see that I now have proof of the crazy (amazing) GTi/928 monster actually existing.

There were only 10 of these made as they restricted in the number by VW.  They needed the VW approval to meet strict European registration rules and they would only allow 10 to be made, even through 100 people put in an order for one.  It was made by the Gunter Artz VW dealership and built by Nordstadt, as a promotion for VW's but not a promotion designed or built by VW themselves. This one is the 4.5 litre V8 but most were built with the 5.0 ltr GT engine.

Actually, Gunther Artz made around twenty and it was´nt made as a promotion piece for the golf. The idea was created almost as a response for a other german project: a Ford Granada also with a 928 engine of 240 hp. The car was build on a shortened 928 base, hence the wider track to give away enough space for the V8. Topspeed is around 240 Km/h and a 0-100 km/h of around 6 sec. The car had a glassfiberbody and a original 928 interior, brakes and automatic transmission, but all original VW Golf/Rabbit front/rear lights
